Reflections of a Proud Canadian

On Monday, June 6th, The Canadian Club of Toronto is pleased to recognize Peter Munk, the Founder and Chairman of Barrick Gold Corporation, with its inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award – an award that celebrates the lifelong efforts and leadership of distinguished Canadians.

Mr. Munk will reflect upon his emergence as a budding entrepreneur in the 1960s through to building an enterprise that stands as a Canadian champion today. He will also argue why Canada has never been in a better position to be a model to the world.

Peter Munk is the Founder and Chairman of the Board of Barrick Gold Corporation. A well-known Canadian business leader and philanthropist, Mr. Munk has built several enterprises that have achieved outstanding performances.

Since founding Barrick in 1983, Mr. Munk and his management team have built the world’s largest gold mining company, now valued at more than $50 billion. Barrick is one of Canada’s leading corporations and employs more than 25,000 people around the world. The company has a portfolio of 25 operating mines, advanced exploration and development projects on five continents, and large land positions on the world’s most prospective mineral trends.

Prior to founding Barrick, Mr. Munk was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Southern Pacific Hotel Corporation, the largest hotel and resort chain in Australasia in the 1970s.

As a business leader and philanthropist, Mr. Munk supports a range of charitable causes.  He has made significant contributions to support world-class education, improve health care facilities and advance public policy. These include significant donations to establish a leading centre for international studies and the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto, the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre in Toronto, and the Centre for Research, Innovation and Technology at Technion University in Israel.

Mr. Munk was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1993, and was promoted to Companion of the Order of Canada in 2009, the country’s highest civilian honour. In 2002, he was presented with the Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship, becoming the first Canadian to receive this prestigious award. Mr. Munk has received many other honours, including honorary doctorates, and inductions into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame and the Canadian Business Hall of Fame.

Mr. Munk has lived in Toronto, Canada for most of his life, having graduated in Electrical Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1952.
