Why Canada Needs More People

By 2100, Canada’s population will stand at 53 million based on today’s projected growth rates. This will place us outside of the 50 leading nations – smaller than Argentina and Burkina Faso. Our small size will have a significant impact on our business growth and global economic standing – resulting in falling housing starts, diminished relevance to our trading partners and a smaller domestic market for retail sales. Tomorrow’s Canadians will not enjoy the same quality of life we enjoy today.

We know we can do better. And we believe that Canada needs more people to compete and succeed in the 21st century global economy.

Join us for the fifth installment of our Canada 150 Series, exploring how we collectively ensure Canada is as prosperous at 200 and beyond, and the launch of the Century Initiative, an ambitious national initiative with the goal of changing our social and economic trajectory by growing Canada’s population to 100 million by 2100.

Dominic Barton, Global Managing Director of McKinsey & Company and Chair of the government’s Advisory Council of Economic Growth, will make the case for growth and will join a vibrant panel to address the future of Canada. This event is moderated by Elena Cherney (Journalist, Wall Street Journal) and includes panelists Mark Wiseman (Senior Managing Director, BlackRock), Goldy Hyder (President and CEO, Hill & Knowlton Strategies Canada) and Kate Subak (Executive DirectorCentury Initiative). The panel will critically discuss how a bigger Canadian population will lead to a more prosperous, relevant and dynamic country for future generations – and what steps we all need to take to get there.
