The Honourable Mélanie Joly
Canada’s Minister of Industry & Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions
The Honourable Mélanie Joly was first elected to the House of Commons to represent Ahuntsic-Cartierville in 2015. She previously held the positions of Minister of Economic Development, Minister of Tourism, Official Languages and La Francophonie, Minister of Canadian Heritage, and, more recently, Minister of Foreign Affairs.
A member of the Cabinet, Minister Joly has worked to promote Canadian culture, develop Canada’s tourism sector, and increase its international visibility. She has also worked to protect the country’s two official languages while promoting the use of French both in Canada and abroad, notably in the digital sphere. As Minister of Foreign Affairs, she defended Canada’s interests worldwide and led the country’s response to Russia’s illegal and unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine.
Before entering federal politics, Minister Joly founded the Vrai changement party for Montreal and was a candidate for the mayoralty of Montreal under this banner in 2013.
Minister Joly holds a Bachelor of Laws (with distinction) from the University of Montreal and a Master’s degree in European and Comparative Law from the University of Oxford. She is the author of the book Changing the Rules of the Game, in which she shares her vision of public policy and citizen engagement. She was also named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum.
